Our First Ever 4DX Experience at Cineworld Xscape

My son and I were kindly invited along to experience 4DX at
Cineworld in Xscape for the opening night of Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu — and as first-timers, we really didn’t know what to expect.
The only insight I had beforehand was from my husband, who had vaguely explained: “The seats move, there’s air, and you get sprayed with water.” I was still struggling to picture exactly what that would involve.
Now having experienced it for ourselves, I can safely say this is an absolute must-try for anyone who hasn’t done 4DX before.
We arrived with plenty of time to grab snacks and drinks before the film. I opted for nachos and dips, while my son went for the huge Rollover hot dog — which definitely didn’t disappoint. It was also handy having
Starbucks on site for a pre-film coffee stop, although I’d probably save the hot drinks for when you’re in a non-moving seat rather than a 4DX screening! The staff were all friendly and helpful from the moment we arrived, and after showing our tickets we were handed our 3D glasses, ready for the experience ahead.
Walking into the 4DX screen, the auditorium was clean, modern and easy to navigate. I’d like to say I was leading my son to our seats, but at 11 years old, I think he leads me more these days.
Once seated, we immediately noticed the differences compared to standard cinema seating — foot plates, vents in the headrest, and a button on the armrest allowing you to switch the water effects on or off. Naturally, we went all in and kept ours firmly switched ON.
I’ll admit, I was slightly nervous about how wet we were actually going to get. Thankfully, this isn’t like being drenched on a theme park water ride. The water effects are subtle and well timed — more like someone flicking water droplets towards you than soaking you completely.
Just before the film started, there was a short demonstration sequence featuring a motorcycle ride through city streets to introduce the 4DX effects. The seat movement initially took me by surprise — they move far more than I expected — but it instantly made me excited for what was coming next.
And honestly? We absolutely loved it.
Controversially perhaps, I’m not normally a huge Star Wars fan, but I thoroughly enjoyed The Mandalorian & Grogu. The 4DX experience added a whole extra dimension to the film. Feeling every twist, turn, flight sequence, fight scene, burst of air and splash of water genuinely made you feel part of the action.
For someone who usually struggles to sit still through a film, I was completely gripped throughout. Waiting to see what movement or effect would happen next became part of the fun.
My son especially loved it. During some of the more intense action scenes, we were both laughing out loud as the seats jolted and bounced around. One thing we quickly learned though — timing your snacks and drinks is essential unless you want them flying everywhere.
The effects themselves were cleverly done. During fight scenes, you’d feel subtle taps against your back, while flying sequences genuinely made you feel like you were soaring through space thanks to the perfectly synchronised seat movements. The air effects around your head and legs added another layer of immersion without ever feeling overwhelming.
Overall, our first 4DX experience was brilliant from start to finish, and I’d highly recommend it to anyone looking to make cinema trips feel far more immersive and memorable.
If you haven’t tried 4DX yet, definitely add it to your list.
One thing worth noting: if you suffer from back problems or are sensitive to movement, it’s worth checking suitability before booking due to the intensity of some of the seat movements.
