Ray Davies said, “In these times of political uncertainties, it is a relief to know that SUNNY AFTERNOON is on the horizon to lift our spirits.”
Producer Sonia Friedman added, “From the moment Ray Davies, Joe Penhall, Ed Hall and I began developing this musical, I knew it was something truly special. The original production opened to rave reviews and went on to win multiple awards. Now, I’m delighted to bring back this joyful, celebratory, Olivier Award-winning Best New Musical for a new UK tour. Ray’s lyrics capture the humour and heartbreak of everyday life, and The Kinks’ music and spirit shaped a generation. Whether you're discovering it for the first time or returning to relive it, I can’t wait for audiences across the UK to experience SUNNY AFTERNOON again — I’ve truly missed it.”
Celebrating the raw energy, passion and timeless sound of one of Britain’s most iconic bands, SUNNY AFTERNOON tells the story of The Kinks, tracing their meteoric rise through a back catalogue packed with classics, including “You Really Got Me,” “Lola,” and “All Day and All of the Night.”
The show earned four Olivier Awards, including Best New Musical and Outstanding Achievement in Music for Ray Davies.
Set in a Britain on the brink of the swinging sixties, SUNNY AFTERNOON is a powerful and feel-good celebration of the music, the era, and the band that changed it all.
Following a sold-out run at Hampstead Theatre, the production transferred to the West End’s Harold Pinter Theatre where it played for two years before embarking on a hugely successful UK and Ireland tour in 2016/17.
With music and lyrics by Ray Davies, a book by Joe Penhall, and original story by Ray Davies, the show is directed by Edward Hall, designed by Miriam Buether, with choreography by Adam Cooper. Lighting design is by Rick Fisher, sound design by Matt McKenzie, and musical and vocal adaptations by Ray Davies and Elliott Ware, based on The Kinks' original recordings.
