Share Your Story and Celebrate Neurodiversity with the Umbrella Project MK ☂️

Celebrate neurodiversity in Milton Keynes: Share your story and be part of the MK Umbrella Project, a vibrant installation at Midsummer Place.
Joanne McClaren

Since March 2025, a striking canopy of 400 rainbow-coloured umbrellas has brought colour and joy to the Boulevard at Midsummer Place Shopping Centre, inviting thousands of visitors to celebrate neurodiversity in Milton Keynes.

This uplifting installation will remain on display until the end of September — but this is just the start of a city-wide commitment to neuro-inclusion. Real, lasting change begins with people and their stories.

To help the Umbrella Project become a true catalyst for cultural transformation, we’re inviting members of the community to share their personal experiences of neurodiversity. Whether you are neurodivergent, know someone who is, or simply want to reflect on how neurodiversity has shaped your perspective, your voice is important.

Your story can help to:

· Dispel myths and challenge stereotypes
· Celebrate the richness of neurodiverse experiences
· Encourage open, inclusive conversations
· Inspire others to embrace difference

“We’re incredibly proud to host the MK Umbrella Project here at Midsummer Place,” said Simon Martin, Centre Manager. “This initiative is about more than a beautiful visual display — it’s about driving meaningful change, fostering empathy, and creating a safe, inclusive space for everyone in our community. We hope every visitor leaves with a deeper understanding of neurodiversity and a commitment to building a more inclusive future.”

One participant, Skye, shared her experience:
“Sharing my story was scary at first, but it felt empowering. For the first time, I felt seen and heard. The Umbrella Project made me proud of who I am, and I hope my story encourages others to feel the same.”

As a thank you for sharing your story, you’ll receive one of our exclusive, limited-edition umbrellas featured in the Midsummer Place installation. Contributors will be invited to collect their umbrella during the centre’s 25th anniversary celebration on Saturday, 27th September 2025.

Share your story. Leave your mark. Help Milton Keynes become a truly neuro-inclusive city.
