Based on the novel by the UK’s number one crime writer, Picture You Dead embarks on its world premiere tour with a stellar cast and a gripping new story that will keep audiences on the edge of their seats.
The cast features 2024 National Television Award winner Peter Ash, making his return to the stage following his powerful farewell from Coronation Street. Known for roles in Footballers’ Wives and the National Theatre’s War Horse, Peter joins a star-studded ensemble including Fiona Wade (Emmerdale, 2:22 A Ghost Story, upcoming FOX comedy Going Dutch), Jodie Steele (Bonnie & Clyde, Wicked, SIX), and George Rainsford (Casualty, Call the Midwife), reprising his role as DSI Roy Grace from the 2023 production Wish You Were Dead. George and Fiona will also reunite on stage after starring together in 2:22 A Ghost Story.
Picture You Dead is the seventh Peter James novel adapted for the stage by award-winning writer Shaun McKenna, directed by Jonathan O’Boyle, who also directed Wish You Were Dead and Looking Good Dead.
Peter James said:
“It’s incredible to see the seventh stage adaptation of my books touring the UK in 2025. I’m so grateful to the hundreds of thousands of people who have supported these plays over the past decade. Honestly, I think this one is the best yet! I’m thrilled with the amazing cast we’ve assembled—it’s going to be a gripping night at the theatre.”
Inspired by a real-life encounter with renowned art forger David Henty, Picture You Dead follows DSI Grace as he reopens a cold case that leads into the secretive world of fine art. When a couple unwittingly pick up what may be a long-lost masterpiece at a car boot sale, they soon find themselves entangled in a deadly web of greed and deception. Only Grace can uncover the truth before it’s too late.
A true crime fiction phenomenon, the Roy Grace novels have sold over 23 million copies worldwide, inspired six acclaimed stage adaptations, and been transformed into the hit ITV series GRACE—a ratings favourite now filming its fifth season. Earlier this year, Roy Grace was even named as Queen Camilla’s favourite fictional detective!
With 20 Sunday Times number one crime novels to his name, Peter James continues to dominate the genre. Produced by Joshua Andrews and Peter James, this latest stage adaptation cements the Grace series as the most successful modern-day crime franchise on stage since Agatha Christie.
