Launched in 2017 by Women Leaders UK, MK Innovates has grown into one of the region’s most exciting free events. It opens the doors to the world of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), showing how these industries shape our everyday lives—and how you could be part of them.

This year’s theme, “Connect to Innovate”, highlights the festival’s mission: using the power of connection to spark ideas, close the STEM skills gap, and ensure every young person—whatever their background, gender or circumstances—has the chance to thrive. By bringing together educators, businesses, students, and the wider community, MK Innovates is helping to create clear pathways into STEM careers and empowering more women and girls to get involved.

Dr. Susan Izadkhasti, Trustee of Women Leaders UK and MK Innovates Festival Lead, explains:
“MK Innovates was created to encourage more women and girls into STEM, but today it’s about much more than that. We are tackling barriers that prevent people - especially those from underrepresented and disadvantaged groups - from seeing themselves in these industries. This event is a celebration of opportunity, a place where connections are made, and futures are shaped.”

What to Expect at MK Innovates

Over 35 leading organisations will be at the festival—including Santander, NatWest, Oracle Red Bull Racing, Cranfield University, Thames Valley Police, Tesla, and Network Rail—ready to showcase the exciting world of STEM. From hands-on activities and live demos to practical career advice, it’s a chance to explore the future and see what’s possible.

The festival is proudly supported by its sponsors: HORIBA (Platinum), HMGCC (Gold), and Niftylift (Silver), who all share a commitment to developing future talent and encouraging diversity in STEM.

Day 1 – Adults & Career Changers

Tuesday 21st October is designed for adults thinking about their next step—whether that’s starting a new career in STEM, developing skills, or exploring new opportunities. You can:

  • Discover current job openings and new technologies.
  • Join workshops on CV writing, interview skills, and career pathways.
  • Connect with employers and industry experts.
  • Hear inspiring stories from women thriving in STEM careers today.

Day 2 – Schools & Young People

On Wednesday 22nd October, the festival will welcome over 1,000 local students for an unforgettable introduction to STEM. Expect interactive activities, motivational talks, and direct engagement with professionals who are shaping the future.

Many young people still don’t realise the exciting opportunities available in these industries, particularly those from underrepresented groups. That’s why MK Innovates is so important—showing girls, young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, people with disabilities, and neurodiverse individuals that there is a place for them in STEM.

Dr. Julie Mills OBE, Chair of Women Leaders UK, adds:
“Encouraging a diverse array of people into STEM careers isn’t just a goal; it’s a necessity. Diversity fuels innovation. By opening doors and breaking down barriers, we can unlock the potential of thousands of young minds and create a brighter future for everyone.”
