A chilling mystery unfolds when a young actress dies suddenly on stage during a performance, leading Detective Chief Inspector Morse into a suspenseful investigation. What begins as a suspicious death inquiry soon takes a darker turn, revealing links to sinister events in Morse’s own past, dating back twenty-five years.
Marking the first-ever stage adaptation of the legendary detective, Inspector Morse: House of Ghosts brings to life one of British television’s most enduring characters. The long-running ITV series, praised by Radio Times as “the greatest British crime series of all time,” inspired the equally beloved spin-offs Lewis and Endeavour. Starring Tom Chambers (Father Brown, Strictly Come Dancing) as Morse, this original stage production is a must-see for fans of gripping mysteries and intricate storytelling.
Tom Chambers shares his excitement about taking on the iconic role:
"I am absolutely thrilled to bring Inspector Morse to the stage. John Thaw made the character a national treasure, and audiences have loved the Morse murder mysteries for years. This brand-new production is a tantalising tale, rich in story and character, and even delves into Morse’s closely guarded personal life. It promises to be a fantastic evening of entertainment."
Simon Friend, co-producer of the production, adds:
"Bringing the nation’s favourite detective to the stage is a rare opportunity. The crime genre has never been more popular, and we’re excited to share this thrilling production with audiences across the country while continuing our successful partnership with Birmingham Repertory Theatre."
Alma Cullen, who wrote several episodes of Inspector Morse (The Secret of Bay 5B, The Infernal Serpent, Fat Chance, The Death of the Self), brings her expertise to this original stage adaptation, inspired by the characters created by Colin Dexter.
Originally starring John Thaw as the erudite Inspector Morse—famed for his love of opera, crosswords, and fine ale—the hit ITV series captivated audiences for 13 years across 33 episodes, earning widespread acclaim and a devoted fanbase. With House of Ghosts, the Morse legacy continues, offering a thrilling new chapter in the detective’s career.
