23 January marked a big moment for Milton Keynes – there’s just one year to go until the city celebrates its 60th birthday, having been officially designated a New Town on 23 January 1967.
The countdown is now underway, and plans are beginning to take shape for a year of celebrations marking six decades of community spirit, creativity and growth. From its bold beginnings, Milton Keynes has grown into one of the UK’s fastest-growing and most diverse cities, a journey recognised in 2022 when it proudly became a city.
Looking ahead to 2027, Milton Keynes City Council is working with partners to develop an exciting programme of cultural celebrations – and local people are being invited to help shape it. Residents and community groups are encouraged to share ideas for events that could bring people together, from neighbourhood celebrations on the anniversary itself to larger summer moments and activity linked to the International Festival.
“We want 2027 to be a truly outstanding celebration of culture, one where everyone can take part, share their stories and come together. It’s a chance for people across Milton Keynes to showcase their heritage, their ambitions and the ideas that continue to build our reputation as a city of innovation and imagination. I look forward to working with communities across Milton Keynes to create an unforgettable year of celebration.”
– Cllr Shanika Mahendran, Cabinet Member for Planning and Placemaking
The Milton Keynes Museum is also playing a key role, working with communities across the city to collect and celebrate shared stories through the new City Gallery.
“Milton Keynes is one of the most important national city building projects of the twentieth century, and it continues to grow and evolve. It is a unique example of what can be achieved by people and communities coming together to build their own city and culture. The 60th birthday is a tremendous opportunity to celebrate this and look to the future together with optimism.”
– Bill Griffiths, Director of Milton Keynes Museum
More opportunities to get involved will be announced soon, including workshops to help shape a new Creative and Cultural Strategy launching in 2027. To find out more about the 60th anniversary plans and how you can take part, visit MK60 (link below).
