Shallow Gallery: A Thousand Small Brown Birds

Shallow Gallery: A Thousand Small Brown Birds by W.M. Pollard & Amy Lay-Pettifer at centre:mk!
Modern building at twilight with a reflective glass upper floor and illuminated ground-floor windows where people are gathered.

“Mur-mur, mur-mur, mur-mur; yes, it is a little refrain that gets the tempo going, a little flicker of time…”
— Yve Lomax, A Twittering Noise

The River Memel, now known as the Nemunas, rises in central Belarus and flows through Lithuania, passing through an area historically known as Memelland in East Prussia before reaching the Baltic Sea.

As the seasons shift, a murmuration gathers outside the shopping centre, accompanied by a daily refrain – like birdsong, but not quite – that settles beneath the traffic on Silbury Boulevard.

This site-specific installation, created in collaboration between artist Bill Pollard and writer Amy Lay-Pettifer, explores their shared interest in how patterns found in nature intersect with personal memories and the rhythms of everyday life, creating echoes and contrasts along the way.

Presented by Arts Central Studios and curated by Rookie Services, Shallow Gallery is a public art platform celebrating contemporary artists and Milton Keynes’ creative community.

📍 Discover the gallery to the left of the Field Walk entrance (Door 13), next to Next. The exhibition is open to the public 24/7.
