Church of Christ the Cornerstone

Church of Christ the Cornerstone is a striking Milton Keynes landmark known for its modern design and welcoming community atmosphere.

About the Church

Church of Christ the Cornerstone is a vibrant ecumenical church right in the heart of Milton Keynes, bringing together five Christian denominations — Anglican, Baptist, Methodist, Roman Catholic and United Reformed — all under one roof. Its striking modern design, by architect Iain Smith, features a tall lantern dome and a prominent cross, creating a welcoming, light-filled space for worship, reflection, and community activity. The building is open daily for prayer, and also hosts a café, bookshop, concerts, exhibitions, and other events.

History

The idea for the church began in 1979, when a Local Ecumenical Partnership was formed to unite Christian denominations in Milton Keynes city centre. Construction began in 1990 after Lord Campbell of Eskan laid the first turf, and the church was completed in December 1991. On 13 March 1992, the building was officially dedicated by Queen Elizabeth II, in a service attended by church leaders from all five denominations. The 101-foot lantern and the 18-foot cross (designed by artist Alan Evans) make it a distinctive landmark in Central Milton Keynes.
